The five mental obstacles are the root causes of human suffering and disturbances in the mind.
- Avidya (Ignorance)
- Asmita (Egoism)
- Raga (Attachment)
- Dvesha (Aversion)
- Abhinivesha (Fear of Death/Clinging to Life)
Here's how I interpret the Kleshas—these inner obstacles that subtly sabotage the business of life.
1. Avidya (Ignorance/Misperception)
- Misjudging what's truly valuable—e.g., prioritizing short-term gains over long-term sustainability.
- Mistaking one's role or identity (e.g., thinking "I am my designation or my company").
2. Asmita (Egoism/False Identification)
- Over-identification with title, success, or failures: "I am the company's success/failure."
- Not delegating or trusting others—"Only I can do it right."
- Taking things personally—feedback, losses, or conflict.
3. Raga (Attachment/Desire)
- Clinging to past wins, business models, or comfort zones.
- Unhealthy attachment to praise, prestige, or visibility.
- Overworking due to attachment to recognition or validation.
4. Dvesha (Aversion/Avoidance)
- Avoiding hard conversations, feedback, or strategic pivots.
- Resistance to tasks or people due to past negative experiences.
- Inaction due to fear of discomfort or past failures.
5. Abhinivesha (Fear/Clinging to Life)
- Deep fear of failure, loss of control, or irrelevance.
- Anxiety over market changes, losing status, or the next big leap.
